TFSAs will be massive $115 billion market, CIBC projects
Canada’s new Tax Free Savings Accounts (TFSAs) will be a $115 billion market by the year 2013, according to CIBC World Markets. Even when it’s launched in the new year, it may be a $20 billion market in 2009, according to a new report issued by CIBC WM. See here for more details.
“The TFSA will kick in exactly when many Canadians are making the transition from passive savers to active savers,” says Benjamin Tal, Senior
Economist at CIBC World Markets in his Consumer Watch Canada Report. Cumulative tax savings by 2013 will be $2 billion.
Tal says the TFSA is the most dramatic change in Canada’s savings system since the Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) was introduced more than half a century ago. But he views the TFSAs not as a rival to the RRSP but complementary to it. However, he believes low-income Canadians will prefer the TFSA, with as many as 400,000 switching from the RRSP to only the TFSA.
Changes in the Canadian economy augur well for its citizens flocking to the TFSA. Tal says after a period of low interest rates, moderate inflation, slow income growth and soaring home prices, Canadians had gotten out of the savings habit. “But now, the levelling off in house prices is stripping households of one of their most important means of savings. And just when Canadians are ready to go back to old fashioned savings behaviour, the
introduction of the TFSA will provide them with an additional tool to raise their active savings.”
The TFSA will also be a boon to seniors, since they can no longer contribute to RRSPs after age 71. For them, the “TFSA is an attractive channel to save beyond the current cut-off age of 71 for making RRSP contributions,” Tal says. TFSA account assets can be transferred to a surviving spouse or child, tax-free without affecting the beneficiaries’ contribution rooms.
He expects more than 40% of Canadians will use the TFSA, with most people using it to shelter highly taxed interest generated by cash or cash equivalents like money market mutual funds or GICs.

Couple ideas for Sarah and Al
I am reading for my paper in the independent study I am doing and the article I am reading is from Forrester. It is called B2B Marketers Fail The Community Marketing Test By Laura Ramos.
The article discusses the new #1 job of setting social media strategy. Connecting with Customers is key. How to do it? Go where they go and participate with solutions
The article recommends seeking out people in the organization who are passionate and knowledgable about issues faced by consumers. This made me think of Al’s quest for the Sales Assistant. This seems like the perfect place to start a blog, or to check to see if there are existing blogs. Starting a sales assistant blog is in my opinion a great extension of what you are already doing.
Another thought for Sarah is to write and circulate guidelines for blogging, wiki templates, best practices for professional network pages etc. I think about it similar to what Dara did for the email…
Let me know if you want me to forward the Forrester Article.
